Have you ever thought how the sound goes when you have call to someone through VoIP? This is made possible by a unique magical protocol known as the Standard Institute of Preotocol-SIP. fw

Let's dive into the world of SIP and see how it works its magic:

The INVITE: Every time you want to call someone, you just only lift up your mobile phone and dial a particular number; at once, your device forwards an ‘INVITE’ to the concerned handset. All the important contact data for the call, such as your phone number, the recipient’s number, the media type (voice or video) you want to use, are included in this message.

The 200 OK: If the recipient is ready to answer through his or her phone, the system sends a “200 OK” message. This is like exclaiming, “Hello there’s no need to avoid me, let’s talk!”

The Media Exchange: After accepting the call, the smartphones share the media streams of one-another. This is the real conversation ground because your voice and the recipient’s voice exchanges take place here.

The BYE: The call control ends when your instrument is prepared to disconnect through a “BYE” message back to the telephone.

But SIP doesn't do it alone!

Codecs: These are like interpreters they transform your voice into data signals and also transform them into sound waves.

Gateways: It’s best to consider them as being in a middle ground between the phone network and the Internet. They assist in the establishment of VoIP calls to PSTN network.

So, why is SIP so important?

Flexibility: SIP is very flexible and a lot of features and services can be supported ranging form standard voice to video calls.

This is particularly important if you are a business person who wants to expand your knowledge on VoIP or you are in the process of upgrading your communication system; you need to have a clue of what SIP is. In that case, the next time you make a VoIP call do yourself a favor and tip your hat to the world of SIP.
